During this Lenten Season, Loretto will be adding to our website a daily Lenten reflection published by the Ignatian Solidarity Network. Click here to view the reflections. We are grateful to them for allowing us to repurpose their reflections during this holy season.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted.

Psalm 34:19

Broken is an interesting word to consider as we walk through the Lenten season.
We can understand it from so many angles—
as separation, destruction, damage,
as injustice,
as defeat, sorrow, despair.

But when approached from another angle,
broken takes on a new meaning.
We remember, in our broken world,
in these turbulent and heartbreaking times for our country and the Catholic Church—
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

We can find strength.
We can be released from captivity.
We can destroy the chains of injustice.
We can break the barriers that keep us from a world
where dignity and compassion bring the justice we seek.
