Sister Community with the Holy Family Sisters in Guatemala
The Loretto Community and the Holy Family Sisters (La Sagrada Familia) in Guatemala established a relationship of sisterhood (hermanamiento) in 1994 in order to enrich one another spiritually and culturally and to support one another in the mission and work of each congregation.
Since then Loretto sisters and co-members have visited the schools of the HFS, worked with them in their missions, and participated in regional meetings and conferences in Guatemala. Holy Family Sisters have attended and addressed our assemblies, visited Loretto centers, and participated in events at the United Nations. Although language continues to be a challenge, both groups feel this relationship has been valuable and enriching. The Loretto and Holy Family Sister Community Committees continue to seek new ways to work together for peace and justice.
Sister Community with FST Sisters in Ghana
The Loretto Community and the Daughters of the Most Blessed Trinity (the FST Sisters) are joining together to build a school in Akokoamong which is a small town in Ghana, West Africa, without a school. The Daughters of the Most Blessed Trinity have been given the land by the chief and the queen mother, and the Loretto Community has joined with them to plan, build and furnish a school for the children of this town near Kumasi, Ghana. Sisters of Loretto continue and expand the work started over 20 years ago in Ghana through this relationship. One Loretto Sister is active on the committee in Ghana where she lives and works and one FST sister, a student, is on the committee in the USA.
The Daughters of the Most Blessed Trinity (the FST Community) is a young Ghanaian community founded to work with the poorest of the poor. They were founded in 1984 by Archbishop Peter Sarpong who heads the Kumasi Archdiocese. The Loretto Community began in Kentucky in 1812 to educate youth of those who migrated south to explore new frontiers. Missionary activities of the Loretto Community led them to Ghana 20 years ago. This association flowered into the Akokoamong school project.
Contributions for the school in Akokoamong may be sent to: Sisters of Loretto at the Loretto Development Office, 300 E. Hampden, Suite 400; Englewood CO 80113.
