How We Spent Our Summer Vacation

By Sofia Almanzan and Sofia Cortez, Loretto Academy students, El Paso The Motherhouse trip was an amazing experience. We realized that the reason we came home so amazed was because of the people that surrounded us on this trip. The teachers, the girls, the campers and most importantly the sisters all had an effect on why we had such an unforgettable experience. The teachers were very kind and genuine people. One of the best parts of our day was reflection time and getting to tell the teachers the highlights of our day. The teachers kept telling us that they were … Continue reading

By Debra Kehl These are the stones that crushed the corn & wheat To make the bread the sisters used to eat O silent stones, did you your lips unseal What tales of long ago they might reveal On the Motherhouse property lichen likes to find its home on these old stones. I have attended to them three times over the years, guessing 15. First time I needed help from Kate Misbauer, who was the archivist. She located photos of the stones to see the words once painted black that were very faded. So, as of June 24 the stones … Continue reading

Loretto Helps Defeat Obamacare Repeal

Loretto was a part of the massive effort to defeat the repeal of Obamacare. Along with all of our phone calls, our visits to Congress members’ offices and protests, we were among the 7,150 signatories of a letter to U.S. Senators delivered by Sister Simone Campbell, a Sister of Social Service and executive director of NETWORK. Our president, Pearl McGivney, and our Mission Activities coordinator, Eileen Harrington, made Loretto’s presence in this effort a reality.

Loretto High School Alumnae Association Grants Support Loretto Values, Mission

By Barbara Nicholas Annually, the board of the Loretto High School Alumnae Association, following consultation with the members at the business meeting, awards small grants of up to $500 to sisters and co-members of Loretto to support projects in which they are involved in educational work or in activities that promote compassion, mercy, justice and peace. The alums, of whom I am one, consider that sharing the association’s resources helps to express our gratitude to the many Sisters of Loretto who were our teachers. The values instilled in us by the teaching and example of these women remain powerful influences. … Continue reading
