Sisters of Loretto Receive Request to Come to Rome to Discuss Issues Arising from Apostolic Visitation
The Congregation of the Sisters of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross has been asked to meet with Vatican officials to discuss concerns the Vatican said had been raised as a result of its 2010 Apostolic Visitation. A letter of invitation to come to Rome, dated Jan. 1, 2016, was signed by Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. The letter was addressed to Sister Pearl McGivney SL, president of the Sisters of Loretto, and received April 15.
The cardinal’s letter relayed portions of a report from the Apostolic Visitation of Loretto, conducted in November 2010. It requested that Sister Pearl “come to Rome to discuss some areas of concern which surfaced during the Apostolic Visitation Process.”
Of that process, Sister Pearl said, “The Loretto Community engaged wholeheartedly in the Apostolic Visitation process, and through it, affirmed our Loretto charism and our lives together. Four sisters from other congregations visited us at our Motherhouse. They interviewed 90 sisters as well as co-members, students, teachers in our schools and other colleagues. The visitors seemed warm and genuinely interested in our lives. They did not inquire about these ‘areas of concern’ with our elected leadership during this visitation, and we had no expectation that six years later we would find ourselves being asked to come to Rome to address any outstanding issues.”
Nonetheless, Sister Pearl said, “We are glad to accept this opportunity for conversation. Loretto’s Constitutions express the manner in which the mission of Loretto is incorporated into the universal mission of the Church. As our Constitutions state, ‘Their approval by the Holy See unites the Loretto congregation and its individual members in responsible fidelity to papal authority’ (Article 135, Loretto Constitutions). We are confident that our dialogue with the Vatican will be fruitful and bear this out.”
