“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” Holy souls have done just that: they have heard the word of God and they have kept it. And now, as the Book of Wisdom tells us: “They are at peace.” Were they ready to meet God?

Of course, they were. Read today’s gospel. It is Jesus’ teaching of the Beatitudes – from Matt. 5:1-12. Pick one of Jesus' descriptions: the poor in spirit, those who mourn, those who hunger for righteousness, the peacemakers? You know people that each description fits. Let us thank God for their witness. Sing Alleluia for them. Sing it loud and from the heart, for they and we, are always Easter people. We are a people who celebrates, even in our sadness of death, the glory of the Resurrection – Jesus’ and ours.

Today, we remember in a special way Loretto members Barbara Beam CoL, Alice Kitchen CoL and Pat Frueh SL.

“Let perpetual light shine upon them.”

Out of darkness the light of Christ will shine
As the dawn of day breaks through the night.

All of us know saints. As we think about their blessedness, we give thanks for their witness to Jesus and His words to us. Are they perfect? No, they are not but they know Jesus’ teachings and show us the way into God’s love.

Were they ready to meet God? Is anyone? Start a list of all those people living you would call a saint. Each one of those people are invited by God into God’s life. Daily they walk with God to love and be loved, to give and not expect praise, to be grateful for all that God has given and to be joyful. Did you put your name on the list?

Let us pray:
Let us give thanks for the saints we knew and for all saintly people. May we be as intentional in our actions as they were. May we remember the dignity of each person we meet, knowing that they are walking around shining like the sun, reflecting the love of God for all people and all creation.

Loretto Justice Fellow G.G. shared their reflective essay "Part of the change":

I still recall the excitement I felt when Annie informed me that I had been selected to join the Loretto Justice Fellowship. I felt blessed and grateful. Blessed because I was going to get the chance to start an internship on what I felt was the right foot, and grateful that I was going to get some financial relief while doing it. There have been a lot of changes with me since orientation day and now. I was very anxious and still did not believe in my good luck. That day, I learned the mission of this fellowship: to identify needs in our community, to produce systemic change by working to fulfill and serve those needs. I realized that those same goals were very close to my heart.

Even though I am a somewhat cautious individual, I like to work with people, all kinds of different people, and to be out there in the community. The Loretto Fellowship and my school, EPCC, placed me at an outpatient addiction center named Aliviane, a place where people with substance use disorders come for help. This placement was right up my alley! Working at Aliviane has forced me to open up a bit more- I am respectful and also friendly- and trust people At the beginning of this journey, because it is a journey, I had very clear goals for myself: get as much learning as you can from this, stay in your lane, and don't rock the boat. But just the first goal is kinda coming along (lol!) I am learning a lot! I've discovered that some of my past personal experiences have helped me understand the population I am serving, experiences that I just wanted to forget at one point.

So, what have I gotten out of this experience, you ask? I am learning that if you trust people, people will become trustworthy; that sometimes someone simple can become an advocate for people without a voice; that sometimes one might not be able to break through a wall or a system, but one can be able to crack it just a bit, and know there will be someone behind you who will do the same, and after so many cracks, that wall, or system, will eventually fall and change will take place. I want to be part of the change.
