Belonging cabin: Why now?

“Kathy is someone who can toss the smallest pebble in a lake and cause ripples of inspiration to spread far and wide.” That’s how a friend described Kathy Nimmer. So who is Kathy Nimmer and what does she have to do with our new accessible cabin?

Kathy has been coming to Knobs Haven for many years. When she was here in November 2025, I shared with her our dream of building an accessible cabin at Cedars of Peace. Kathy was thrilled because, as a person who is blind, she is aware of the need for accessible spaces for people with disabilities.

Several weeks later, Kathy called to say that she had been named one of two individual recipients of the national 2026 Helen Keller Achievement Award. Already in demand as a motivational speaker, her schedule would increase considerably with the award, and she wanted to use the exposure to promote funding for our new cabin.

And just like that, a dream that had been hovering for years as a possibility, landed. With deep gratitude to Kathy, the time for building is now.

If you would like to make a donation in support of the creation of Belonging cabin, you may do so here.
