Loretto joins hearts and hands for Peace Week

It is interesting that we designate only seven days to honor Peace Week. It is also interesting that the early rule of the Sisters of Loretto from 1820 says, “The society is and ought to be nothing but a society of charity, love and concord.” And the Constitutions rewritten in 2024 tell us, “Christ is the peace between us.”  These two statements are mainstays in the direction of our lives.

We need inner work and outer work to be people of peace. ​Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you.” (John 14:27)

Are we too caught up in ourselves to be peacemakers? The small seed of peace inside of each person is entrusted to us by God to act. Pope Francis often talked about moving from “I” to “We” – unite as a family, live in a liberating, responsible way – meaning to live as the people of God, gathered from every language, people and nation, living together in peace. Pope Francis would say, “Everything is linked, everybody is connected. What happens to one, happens to all.” 

Peace is a gift of God to the world. Let’s find ours.
