Our life in community in the present time empowers us for mission and is itself an expression of mission.

I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out.
Luke 19:40
Isaiah reminds us, “The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.“ (Isaiah 50:4) But what happens when our tongues grow weary? When fear chokes our voices? When silence is demanded of us?
We live in a time when speaking out feels increasingly risky. Across the country, diversity, equity and inclusion programs are being slashed. National Park employees, government workers and even educators fear that a single email — or their silence — could cost them their livelihoods. The weight of the empire presses down once again, demanding quiet compliance. And beyond our borders, war rages. Gaza. Ukraine. The Congo. The suffering of our world echoes the suffering of Christ on the cross.
And yet, even in the face of fear, the call remains: Take heart. Speak. Act.
As we stand at the Foot of the Cross, what does it mean to take heart? It means refusing to let fear silence us. It means using our voices — whether weary or strong — to proclaim justice. It means recognizing that even the smallest acts of resistance, the simplest acts of love, can shake the foundations of power.
“The stones will cry out if we are silent.” But what if, instead, we dared to speak?
Loretto dares to speak.
