Holy Land Energy Vision Statement: A Movement For Clean Energy

Three religious communities in Kentucky’s “Holy Land” raise their voices in support of clean energy. Can you join us?

Three religious congregations jointly released an interfaith Energy Vision at a prayer ritual on Dec. 10.

On Dec. 10, three Catholic religious communities released their new Energy Vision Statement at an interfaith prayer ritual in central Kentucky. Approximately 65 people gathered on the Boone family farm in New Haven, Ky. to celebrate and affirm the new Energy Vision, which has been signed by over 125 faith-based organizations and nearly 1000 individuals.

The ritual included the voices of leaders from many faith traditions, highlighting the common call to care for creation in all faiths. The Vision Statement co-authors read from the text itself, which calls people of faith to act on their convictions to protect earth from destructive resource extraction practices: “We commit ourselves to use our spiritual and social resources and our public credibility in all possible ways to promote the transition from fossil fuel energy to renewable energy resources.”

In a statement read at the service, farmer-activist Wendell Berry wrote: “Like mountain top removal, fracking and the Bluegrass Pipeline reveal our willingness not only to use without care or thanks a world we did not make, but to put it entirely at risk…in order to have things that we do not need but merely want.”

Watch the whole service here.

As a result of our experience with the Bluegrass Pipeline proposed to carry huge volumes of natural gas liquids (NGLs) through our area of central Kentucky, the Dominican Sisters of Peace, the Loretto Community and the Sisters of Charity of Narazeth collaborated to formulate, sign, and publish this public statement of our religious beliefs and commitments regarding energy sources for our nation and our world. Our religious convictions lead us to reject all plans for expanded extraction of fossil fuel or infrastructures such as pipelines that require the plundering of God’s creation and the endangerment of human communities. We advocate instead for immediate regional and national plans for the transition to renewable sources of energy.

We invite all communities of faith of all religious traditions to consider joining us in signing this public statement. We also welcome signatures from interested individuals, organizations, and committees.
