Loretto Foundation Day – 212 Years: April 25, 1812 – April 25, 2024
The Constitutions of the Sisters of Loretto “direct us to praise and minister in Jesus name. Grounded by our roots, enlightened by the Gospel and the Council, we are free to work for a future in which the poor and suffering, the hungry in body and spirit, will know God’s saving love present in them.” (I Am the Way, #9)
Every April 25, you will find the Loretto Community honoring this day as the Foundation Day of our Community. This day was chosen because it is the day the first Community members celebrated their vows in Kentucky, marking that special day Loretto formally began.

Loretto was originally created to reach out to the families who had moved to the Kentucky region and whose children needed an education. Mary Rhodes, Christina Stuart and Anne Havern, the first three Loretto members, began a mission that would call us to follow the Gospel for the next 200-plus years. The story continues today as Loretto women stand with the poor and immigrants, teach children, fight injustice, heal the sick, share spirituality, empower women, defend the planet, promote peace, create community and offer hope. Loretto has done that for the past 212 years, and we ask God’s blessing on this feast day as we continue the mission. We send joyful greetings to you and ask for your blessing and prayers.
Happy Birthday, Loretto! Make a wish!
