Hospitality: A hallmark of Loretto’s life in community since 1812

The joy and privilege of welcoming others is not new to Loretto. We have welcomed others to our homes, neighborhoods, schools, cities and towns, churches and workplaces for more than 200 years. Hospitality has been a hallmark of Loretto’s life in community. The Constitutions of the Sisters of Loretto reminds us in article 35, “Rejoicing in and strengthened by our mutual love, we go forth to meet our farther neighbor in their human needs and aspirations. We seek to reach out beyond boundaries imposed by any differences that tend to separate us.”
More urgently than ever before, we must pay attention to the biblical call from St. Paul to “welcome the stranger, for some have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2). We are called to create a world of engagement with others of various cultures, religions, ethnicities and races of people. The world is smaller now but with faster communication and travel we are blessed to know many from many parts of the world other than our own. In the midst of all that understanding is God’s handiwork in all its glory and depth.
Loretto invites you to welcome the Spirit, welcome the gifts of others, respond to their needs as is possible. In this year of Jubilee, join us as Pilgrims of Hope in recognizing God’s face in the face of the stranger. Think of that person you welcomed: Did you entertain an angel? Did you know?
