Loretto celebrates International Day of Peace with Pinwheels for Peace
Posted on September 23, 2024, by Loretto Community
Three Loretto schools – Loretto Academy, El Paso, Texas.; Nerinx Hall High School, St. Louis; and St. Mary’s Academy, Denver – collaborated on making Pinwheels for Peace in anticipation of International Day of Peace on Sept. 21.
Students in each of the schools made pinwheels that were mailed to the Loretto Motherhouse where they will be used as markers for peace. Carolyn Jaramillo CoL will gather and assemble the pinwheels and then place them around the Motherhouse campus as reminders that peace in our world is a real possibility. Some of these pinwheels might even adorn the local public library!
Pinwheels were also displayed on the campus of each of the schools.
Spinning Peace
Windmills made by hands
of all ages
spin messages of peace. Each takes some deliberate force—
a bit of wind, a puckered blow,
a wave through the air.Spinning and mesmerizing,
so that one can’t help following
the round and round and round—
wobbly … smooth.Messages of cooperation,
of friendship,
of equality,
of justice.Peace spins

from lowly places near the ground
into distant realms
but
especially
into our hands
and our hearts.
