Seeing with the Heart

What does your heart see in our world at this time? Mine sees groups of people all over the world joining hands to protect their democracies. I see great sorrow and heartbreak as well as great heroism. I see David the small shepherd going out to meet Goliath.
Also joining hands for peace and justice on the other side of our earth is the Loretto Community standing up for the poor and oppressed. We are organizing to join the Poor People’s Campaign in their grassroots March on Washington on June 18. We are uniting for freedom and human rights, higher wages and better health care for all. We walk for justice.
Not everyone can participate in the same way, but every effort affects the good of the whole. Some will travel to Washington to join the march and to lobby legislators. Roberta Hudlow is making a Loretto banner to carry. Some, unable to go for various reasons, will pray for our brothers and sisters and for our planet Earth. Each in her/his own way will add their piece to the tapestry. We may see sorrow, death, brokenness and injustice, but looking with the heart, we can see Spirit: love being poured out, light in the darkness, heartfelt generosity, empathy and compassion.
Spring has arrived. Mother birds are teaching their fledglings how to bathe in a birdbath. Flowers are popping their colorful heads up through recent hard, cold ground. The trees are dressing up again. Like rebirth, let us work with awareness, meaning and balance. Let us keep our lights shining in the midst of a troubled world.
So what can we see? Though times are turbulent and unknown, the arms and feet of Jesus in Poland are delivering strollers to exhausted Ukrainian mothers. Love and compassion are opening homes to welcome strangers with their dogs and cats. The arms and feet of Jesus join others around this country walking the streets and carrying a Loretto banner to support fairness for all. Members walk the halls of Congress petitioning legislators to do the just thing. Look deeper. Can you see the light of Jesus shining in the darkness?
