Outward and forward in love has been the story of Loretto since its founding in 1812. For the past 214 years, Loretto’s foundational hope has been lived out throughout the life and mission work of thousands of members. I Am the Way, Loretto Constitutions, #33, says it most importantly: “As we stand with Mary at the foot of the Cross, we strive to bring the healing spirit of God into our world, and we commit ourselves to improving the conditions of those who suffer from injustice, oppression and deprivation of dignity. In this way, we participate in the Church’s mission of proclaiming the transforming love of God.”

When Cardinal Prefect Joao de Aviz approved minor changes to Lorettyo’s Constitutions in 2024, he stated this hope: “These changes would increase our presence of unity and communion in the world.” And in the original decree, Cardinal Martinez-Somalo wrote in 1997, “May the living of these constitutions encourage an ever deeper commitment in accordance with the spirit of the founders and under the constant protection of Mary at the foot of the cross.”

As we celebrate Loretto’s Foundation Day April 25, we strive to continue outward in love. Loretto’s task is clear: We live in the heart of the Gospel, in our promotion of the dignity of each person, our preferential option for the poor and in loving and caring for earth.

Join us in gratitude to God for all the blessings we have been given.
