From Loretto at UN: International Women’s Day 2019
Posted on April 1, 2019, by Beth Blissman CoL
In March as we celebrated Women’s Month, the United Nations recognized International Women’s Day on March 8, with the theme of “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change.” This theme was chosen to echo the primary focus of the 63rd Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63) taking place March 11-22.
The day’s celebrations centered around empowering girls and women to embrace their passions for problem-solving through science and entrepreneurship.
One excellent way to follow what is happening at the United Nations is to check out our social media handles and follow us online for photos, videos and links to articles:

Also, history buffs can read about the history (“herstory”?) of International Women’s Day here: http://www.un.org/en/events/womensday/history.shtml.
Finally, here is information about a media editorial package focused on the fifth of the 17 SDGs (SDG 5 – Gender Equality). The content includes impact stories on women and girls who are breaking down barriers to create a better world for everyone, the U.N. Secretary-General’s message for the day, an interview with former UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador Annie Lennox, and information on the International Labour Organization’s new report “A Quantum Leap for Gender Equality.” The full package is available at http://bit.ly/sdgmediacompact.
Be sure to stay tuned next month to hear about the parallel events that Loretto at the UN co-sponsored during CSW63, especially “Breakthrough in Transforming Patriarchy: The Promise of Gender Equity and Reconciliation.”
