Out of darkness the light of Christ will shine as the dawn of day breaks through the night.
“Out of Darkness,” Tom Kendzia
What a week it has been for Mary, Jesus’ mother, the other women at the cross, the disciples and their friends as they experience sacrifice and finally blessing as the light of Christ begins to grow among them.
We can all see the mystery of Holy Week this year. It is filled with the sadness of war, the ambiguities in our search for authentic living, the gift of hope we desire. How to live God’s image in the world today? It is a week of mystery and sacrifice for Jesus and friends, and perhaps for us as well. We can all ask, as I am sure was asked 2,000 years ago, “What is next? What will happen now?”
What images does the cross bring to mind? War, destruction, poverty, hunger, suffering and death – the crosses so many in the world today must carry. All this and more? Do you see love there? Yes.
Like Mary, the other women at the cross and the disciples, we are not just observers. We enter into this week wondering, “How has this Lent helped me enter into Jesus’ death and resurrection? How has this Lent moved me from darkness to the light of Christ?”
It is our time to ask God to focus our hearts. Alleluia is our song! After a Holy Week of challenge, of Jesus’ passion and death, there is no song to sing but Alleluia – the song of new life, the song of freedom that shines through Holy Week to Easter, from darkness to light. Sing it loud.
Loretto wishes you all Easter joy and peace.
