“The historic Loretto Academy building is located at 1111 W. 39th Street in the Westport District neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri (Jackson County). There are so many stories of people who built and shaped this school.

“The building was a Catholic girls’ educational facility and is only one of a few institutional buildings of the Georgian Revival architectural style from the early 1900s that still exists. The Loretto Academy building was run by the Sisters of Loretto from 1903 to 1966 and the building itself is 120 years old and continues to be a landmark in the Westport District. Amazing.

“The Sisters gained a reputation for educational innovation, as well as racial and religious tolerance, which created a strong interest in having their services. The Loretto Order was the first religious order of women founded in the United States in 1812.”

You can read the entire article, which highlights the architecture and history of the building, and the Sisters of Loretto, here.
