There is nothing else more important to do this week but to remember and pray for peace and to ask God to guide all countries in the way of peace.
Wednesday, Aug. 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. God’s glory is revealed, not in a challenging weapon or burst of a bomb but in the “light that shines in the darkness,” a light that shows us that power is from God and not from humanity. God said to us on that day, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him.”
We say to the world: Listen to God. Listen to God. Make it your prayer: Listen to God. Listen.
Aug. 6 is also the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. The 80th anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki is Saturday, Aug. 9. Have you written your congressperson yet to submit a petition for peace?
We in America can only imagine nuclear weapons’ extraordinary capacity for destruction. Imagine the disastrous health and environmental effects, the indiscriminate targeting, the crippling effects of a nuclear detonation on medical facilities and relief efforts, and the long-lasting radiation effects on the surrounding area and the children. It’s always the children who suffer.
This week Loretto’s Peace Committee will host two Communitywide prayer services open to the public to commemorate the anniversaries of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We invite all to join us in our “Prayer for Peace.” And we invite you to visit Loretto’s Facebook page, where this week we will feature Loretto’s continuing actions for peace.
