Martin Luther King Day, January 20, 2020: Build the Beloved Community

Posted on January 20, 2020, by Loretto Community

Loretto Community members march with others in the Denver Marade on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, continue Loretto’s long tradition of standing with and for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s teachings on the triple evils of racism, poverty, and war. Dr. King preached the Gospel directive that we are called to build the Beloved Community.

Dedicate your intention to ending racism, poverty and war. Pray extra hard. Talk with folks about Dr. King and his teachings. If ever there was a Holy Day, it is MLK Day. Please observe it fully, intentionally, prayerfully.

Our Prayer of Confession:  Creative and loving God, you have searched us out and known us and all that we are is open to you.  We confess that we have sinned against you: we have put up walls between ourselves and you. We confess that we have sinned against each other: we have put up walls between ourselves and our neighbors, giving in to fear, ignorance and arrogance.  We are stained by the sin of racism and fail to respect the gifts of all your peoples. Lead us to cry out with the prophets, until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. Empower us to become repairers of the breach, able to join with the most vulnerable among us in creating the beloved community that you intended our world to be.

Updated report of Loretto at the 2020 Denver Marade

Tens of thousands walked the 2 miles for this day of solidarity and collective spirit. The Denver Loretto Community is honored to participate each year. It is one of the largest march/parades in the country. About 33 years ago, Mary Ann Coyle, Mary Ann Cunningham and Pat McCormick made the banner still carried in this 35th year.
