Posted on December 12, 2015, by Loretto Community
Fred Harris was born in Flint, Mich. He was raised as an only child by devout Catholic parents who sent him to Catholic high school and college. Fred spent three years in the U.S. Air Force, mostly in the Panama Canal Zone, and six months at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. After graduating from the University of Detroit, he came to Denver in 1955. He received a business administration degree from the College of Great Falls, Mont. He and his wife Jane, who were married in December 1972, have two daughters, two granddaughters, one grandson and 10 grandchildren. Fred commented that married life, their children and their parish were the most important things to them, along with their work.
Fred also served as field secretary for the Colorado Police Protective Association. He was very active in the Knights of Columbus and in Spirit of Christ Parish in Denver, where he served as usher, Eucharistic minister and hotline counselor. He did some tax work and financial counseling. He loved golf and swimming. Fred and his wife Jane were managers and co-managers at Holiday Retirement Corporation in Casa Grande, Ariz., where they had lived for the past 20 years.
Fred formed a deep admiration and respect for Loretto that started when he was employed at Loretto Heights College in Denver in 1960. He was comptroller in the business office from 1960 to 1967. Since 1978, he and Jane were Amway distributers. Fred said they enjoy dealing with people on a business and social basis. It has helped them develop a positive and caring attitude for all people.
Fred admired the forward-looking vision of the Loretto Community and believed that the work done by individual members is a credit to our Church, community and country. He found the most endearing quality of the Community to be the way the members express a Christlike love for one another. Fred and Jane became co-members on Oct. 17, 1987.
A funeral Mass was celebrated for Fred Dec. 22 at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary in Denver. Father Kenneth Leone officiated. Burial was at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
