What is Emerging?

Richard Rohr’s “Daily Meditation” on Oct. 28 featured an article by Wesley Granberg-Michaelson in which he discussed the problem in today’s politics. He based the problem on the temptation to begin with our political position and then use religion to justify our political position. So, Michaelson asks, “What if we make the inward journey our starting point? What if we recognize that our engagement in politics should be rooted in our participation in the Trinitarian flow of God’s love? Then everything changes.” We are no longer guided politically but we know that at the heart of all creation is the love of God overflowing all of life. “We are invited,” he writes, “to participate in the transforming power of this love. There we discover the ground of our being, centering all our life and action.”*

So how does this transformation happen to those who are imbedded in their political position? A clear answer came in Mary Swain’s homily on Nov. 3 in which she shares how we can truly love our neighbor. Mary quotes Elizabeth Johnson, “Encompassed by incomprehensible holy mystery, we allow our hearts to be conformed to God’s own heart. … And God’s heart pours out loving-kindness on the world in unrepentant faithfulness.”**

Love energy is powerful. God’s love can transform. Our love can transform. Our love is God’s love. Love can transform our broken world. As Mary noted in her homily, “We pray that we are able to pour out loving-kindness on the world in unrepentant faithfulness.”** We accept the invitation from God to participate in the transforming power of love.
