Loretto lawyers live out Loretto mission, ‘work for justice’ through legal system

The search for justice is common to all in Loretto, but the means may vary. The Loretto members who are lawyers have chosen to pursue justice through the legal system: many paths and the same spirit.

Over the past few decades, a number of lawyers have been associated with the Sisters of Loretto-Loretto Community. Two women, formerly Sisters of Loretto, left the Community in the 1960s or early ‘70s and pursued law degrees: Marilyn Morheuser and Maureen Smith. Both later re-joined Loretto as co-members. Eileen Harrington was in law school at the time that she left the Vowed Member Formation Program; she also became a co-member at a later date. Mary Catherine Rabbitt SL went to law school as a Sister of Loretto. Mary Ann Reese (now deceased), Libby Comeaux, Sally Maresh, Allison Lemons are among other women lawyers who joined Loretto as co-members.

Each practiced (or is still practicing) in a different area of civil law. If there is a common denominator, it may be found in the desire of each of these Loretto members to live out the meaning of mission in Article 36 of I Am the Way, Loretto’s Constitutions: “We work for justice and act for peace because the Gospel urges us.”

The search for justice is common to all in Loretto, but the means may vary. These women have chosen to pursue justice through the legal system: many paths and the same spirit. This week on our socials, we will highlight our Loretto lawyers.

Also, the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows falls this week on Sept. 15. Celebrate with Loretto! That day is one of our most important feast days. If you would read all the articles in Loretto’s Constitutions you could probably find reference to the Sorrows of Mary, the Mother of God, in practically every article. She is our Mother, she teaches us from the Foot of the Cross, she is no stranger to hardships, she is our example in following Jesus. We are “Friends of Mary” and friends of one another. The Loretto Constitutions remind us, “As friends of Mary we seek compassionate ways to serve the suffering Body of Christ.” To her we offer praise and thanksgiving.

Please pray with us: “O suffering Jesus, O sorrowful Mary.”

According to our records, Ann Pat received a scholarship to Webster College (now University) where she met the Sisters of Loretto. She graduated from Webster in 1940. Besides having a degree from Webster, she also had a master’s degree in Latin from Creighton University in Omaha (1951) and an MSS (Magisterii in Scientis Sacris) in theology from Regina Mundi in Rome (1957).
