Patricia McKissack (1994 Mary Rhodes Awardee), a well-known writer, especially of books for children and young adults, has a new book about children’s games and songs. It is Let’s Clap, Jump, Sing & Shout; Dance, Spin & Turn It Out.
Pat and her sister started the idea by sharing some of their remembered hand-clap songs. Pat’s late husband, Fredrick, did much of the research into the origins of the songs.
Well-known illustrator Brian Pinkley provided the rollicking art work.
Some of the chants were inspired by the Underground Railroad. The entries originate in many cultures.
A quote from Pat in an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch announcing the book (Feb. 19, 2017) is, “[When cultures] come together, one of the few things they hold is their stories.” The book is published by Schwartz & Wade/Random House.
