For the first century and a half of Loretto school history, teachers and students worked together in the classroom, and the Loretto leaders were in charge of school administration. After Vatican II, changes in all religious communities and their ministries led to the expansion of Loretto school governance through independent boards that included both Loretto members and other professional individuals. Today, the historic ties of Loretto with its legacy educational institutions (Nerinx Hall, St. Mary’s Academy, Loretto Academy, Havern and Escuela de Guadalupe) are reinforced through study of Loretto history, participation in community service, immersion trips to Loretto Motherhouse and cooperative endeavors consistent with Loretto school values.
New board members, many of them alums, receive orientation and ongoing formation in Loretto history and current activities. Local Loretto Community members are invited to participate in school events, and some faculty are part of Loretto Community, Loretto Circles and Loretto LINK. The Loretto charism of loving service is alive and well on these campuses and includes many thousands of graduates who are making their mark in the world.
This week on Loretto’s Facebook page we will highlight Loretto members who currently serve as members of the various school boards of Loretto’s legacy educational institutions. Serving in this role, they help to live out and ensure the future of Loretto’s 213-year-and-counting foundational commitment to education.
