My work continues to be organic and, more specifically, rooted in the human figure. However, I frequently stay at the cutting edge of the purely abstract and the real, sometimes only hinting at the more objective shape.
Jeanne Dueber SL
Jeanne Dueber SL has been resident artist at the Loretto Motherhouse since 1978. A renowned sculptor and multimedia artist, she is known for using natural materials to explore spirituality, faith and the human figure. Jeanne has shown her work in more than 100 exhibitions across the United States. She also has displayed her work in corporate connections and in many other schools and churches and is well-represented in public and private collections.
Jeanne attended Webster College (now Webster University) in St. Louis on a full scholarship and worked for renowned artist Rudy Torrini as his assistant. She received her master’s in sculpture from the University of Iowa where she studied under Oliver Strebelle. In 1972, Sister Jeanne received the Fulbright-Hays study grant in art history, which she used to study works in Italy.
Joanne Fogarty, Jeanne’s sister, told Webster-Kirkwood Times reporter Mary Shapiro in 2015 that Jeanne had been an artist her whole life and started sculpting when just a young child. While Jeanne had done paintings, her true love was sculpture, Fogarty had said.Of her remarkable talent, Jeanne once offered this humble insight: “Art has always been important to me. I have an interest in constructing things and inventing.” This week on Loretto’s Facebook page we will feature just a few of her incredible works. Enjoy!
