Catholic Schools Week should be more than one week out of the whole year! It is a celebration of academic excellence, faith formation, community service and the mission of the Church. That is the expectation of every school, parish, teacher and parent.
Pope Francis wrote, “Catholic education plays a prophetic role in helping future generations tackle problems with an integrated, inclusive approach.”
The Sisters of Loretto, from our beginning in 1812, “recognized the need of children in the area (of Kentucky) for education and religious formation. As they responded to the need, they found joy and meaning in their work and life together.” (I Am the Way, Loretto’s Constitutions, #2)
Works of education have always been Loretto’s challenge and joy. Did you have a Loretto member teach you? Was your school of academic excellence? What teacher would you name who touched your spirit and learning? This week is a time to name that favorite teacher, to thank her or him for the many ways they touched your life. If you know where to find that person, don’t put off a warm thank you.
How lucky to have had good teachers! This week on Loretto’s socials, we’ll highlight some of those folks who introduced children to the world of formal education – those who taught pre-K and primary school.
