Loretto Heeds John Lewis’s Call To Find Way To Get In ‘Good Trouble’
Posted on July 1, 2022, by Loretto Community
John Lewis said to America, “You must find a way to get in the way and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. … You have a moral obligation, a mission, and a mandate, when you leave here, to go out and seek justice for all. You can do it. You must do it.”
Lewis was speaking from the heart on March 1, 2020, as he called on all Americans to make “good trouble.” Lewis was speaking at a rally to commemorate the tragic events of “Bloody Sunday” that occurred March 7, 1965, as peaceful protesters were beaten as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala.
I Am the Way, the Constitutions of the Sisters of Loretto, tells us in just one sentence what we are doing and must continue to do: “We work for justice and act for peace because the Gospel urges us”
The entire Loretto Community is an essential part of Loretto’s long tradition of education. We must educate for truth, we must educate for peace, we must educate for the Gospel. Since the whole world is God’s, we must act in God’s name. We must ask God to send us. Will that action cause upheaval? Will sending us cause division? Will it cause “Good Trouble?”
Loretto prays: “Help us, O God, to live into the truth. Send us.”
