Loretto Treasures Sacredness of Earth

“I Am the Way,” Loretto Constitutions, #12, says, “We dedicate ourselves to Jesus Christ in his unique person, and to the new creation for which he died and rose.”

The book of Genesis 2:2 tells us, “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that God had done, and then God rested.”

Since we are made in the image of God, our mission is to care for all of creation, even when God is resting. In Genesis, not only do we read the story of creation, we read the story of covenant. Through creation, God intimately relates to us and gives us a charge: Take care of what I have given you. “This is the covenant I long for … I make it between me and you and every living creature for all generations.” (Gn 9:12)

In the early 1990s, the Loretto Earth Network was founded and a committee formed to educate and alert its members and all who would join them in both the mystery and miracle of creation and the crisis that threatens our universe.

The Loretto Earth Network is dedicated to re-establishing right relationships between the human community and the Earth community. We are not separate from the universe. We are living into a new understanding of the sacredness of all creation and of our oneness with Earth. God may be resting, but we better not be.
